How to use star charts

Using a Star Chart or Other Reward Systems.

Make sure that everybody is rewards your child consistently that includes grandparents, nursery play leaders, and childminders. It is also important that they use the same form of praise.

When you are  praising him make sure he knows what it's for “Well done, you did a wee/poo on your potty, can have a star for your chart”  Lots of verbal praise no matter how daft you feel, or over the top and false it seems

No matter how over the top it seems, make sure that you give her lots of hugs and claps when they go in their potty. Even for a near miss, these attempts must be observed.

At first it is important to make getting stars or rewards easy, if you don't he will soon give up, you can talk later about misses.

It is important never to take away stars or rewards, no matter how cross you feel or disheartened. It is also important never to try and bribe your child into using the potty, they must feel that they have done this by themselves, it is all part of the grown up feeling.

If you feel that star charts aren't working think of a new incentive, we have heard of all kinds of fun things that children love to do, including collection special stickers or collectables, water balloons, perhaps filling a large jar with their cherished items that they can have at the end of the day will help.  Remember a week is a long time for a 2 year old child.
